ABOUT US Our founder, Robert McMahan, is an award-winning New York City based urban landscape and documentary photographer. His “Walk of Courage” is one of only 30 photographs inducted into the renowned Bettmann Archive since 1985. The McMahan Photo Art Gallery & Archive originated as Robert McMahan Photography in 2001, when Robert began producing his Fine Art Photo Greeting Cards from his bedroom floor and distributing them to New York City gift shops.
In 2002 Mr. McMahan turned a customer’s unexpected request for a restored print of the Wright Brother’s First Flight into the inspiration for what is now The McMahan Photo Art Gallery & Archive at www.mcmahanphoto.com. The McMahan Photo Art Gallery & Archive offers historic photo prints, image licensing, historic photo research, personalized holiday cards, and custom framing. We are a full featured online photo art gallery, focussed on making great photo art available to the public as museum quality wall art at great prices. We offer museum quality photographic prints from some of the most iconic documentary photographs ever taken. Robert and his team research, restore, reproduce, and in many cases save from obscurity, photographs of historical significance. The McMahan Photo Art Gallery & Archive currently contains over 25,000 images and is continually growing. The value of the collection is not in its size though, but in its variety of imagery, the painstaking restoration work that has been applied to it, and the expertise with which each image is printed to perfection.
Producing photographic prints is part science and part art. While other vendors have access to the same print technologies, and even some of the same images, we pride ourselves on our artistry. By removing dust and scratches, making custom color corrections, adjusting for odd color shifts in old photos, and maximizing detail, we produce stunning prints that stay true to the original photographer’s image. Every image is unique and requires it’s own ‘hands on’ attention, and Robert and our team are accomplished photographers and artists in their own right, making all the difference!

We do still maintain an office in Brooklyn (same building, different mailing address, as listed above). If you wish to meet in person, please call or email us to set an appointment.

ORDERING
Placing an Order:
We've designed this website to make online ordering as easy as possible. Our order processing functionality is hosted by Yahoo Store, which encrypts your payment details and ensures that your transaction is safe over the Internet. If you have any difficulty placing an order, or prefer to order via a live person, feel free to call or email using our contact info.
Payment Methods:
We accept the following payment methods:
Credit Cards
Credit Cards can be processed through this online store, directly over the phone or via PayPal. Using your credit card through this store streamlines the order process and usually gets your order shipped as fast as possible.
PayPal
Our PayPal address is robertmcmahanphoto.com. PayPal is one of the payment options during checkout. If you select PayPal, you will be prompted to fill out your PayPal information so that money will be transfered to us. The way the PayPal checkout works, it is possible to place an order without paying for any custom options or packing surcharges that may be calculated after checkout or arranged over the phone with you. If this happens, we will contact you for the amount due. All orders through this store that are not paid in full within 48 hours, or arranged otherwise directly with us, will be cancelled.
Checks & Money Orders
Checks and money orders are accepted for purchases through our eBay Store or for direct orders placed via email and telephone. Payments should be sent to our shipping address, and must include your shipment address, order number and email address. Personal checks typically take 3-5 business days to clear, after which your order is processed.
Cash
We encourage you not to send cash. If you have no alternative, please send cash via certified mail or a comparable method that requires our signature upon delivery.
Order Changes, Cancellations & Refunds:
All changes, cancellations and refund requests should be made ASAP via both email and telephone if possible. Though we state that shipments go out in 2-3 days, we occasionally get orders out within hours. Of course, we'll do everything that we can to fulfill your request.
International Ordering:
We welcome your international orders, and ship internationally every day. We regret that we cannot ship photo frames internationally. All items that cannot ship internationally are clearly marked "USA Only." The shopping cart will allow you to check out with these items, so please be sure not to include them in your shipment. Every order is reviewed prior to shipping, so if you have placed an order that cannot be fulfilled, we will notify you and will refund you for these items and their applicable shipping.
NYS Sales Tax:
Sales tax is charged to customers with shipping addresses in New York State or picking-up items in person. New York State requires that sales tax be applied to both your product purchase and the cost of shipping. If you are located in New York State, and are tax exempt, we require that you provide us with the appropriate state forms. Tax-exempt orders are not currently supported online, so please email or call with your order.
Custom Orders:
Most items ordered through this website are considered standard orders. We can also process a custom order for you via email or telephone. If you have a particular item request, want a larger size print, want greeting cards custom printed, etc., these would qualify as custom orders. Custom orders may only be returned for replacement with identical items. Custom orders will always require your written or verbal approval before proceeding.

SHIPPING
Domestic USA Shipments:
Standard domestic orders are shipped via the United States Postal Service or UPS Ground, which usually requires 3-7 days in transit, in addition to our in house processing time. Shipments may also be expedited via UPS 2-day, or UPS Overnight service. While these services are reliable and supposedly guaranteed, the reality is that there's never a guarantee on their expediency. We do however guarantee every shipment against loss or damage. If you have a deadline for delivery, we strongly encourage you to call us with your requirements.
International Shipments:
International orders are shipped via USPS International Airmail or Global Priority Mail (typically 7-21 days in transit.) All photographs, posters, greeting cards, and any other form of art sold by us, is guaranteed against damage in transit. We do not ship frames internationally, as they are expensive to ship and are particularly susceptible to damage. Also note that many countries will impose a duty or tax at the time of delivery on shipments over certain valuations. We advise that you determine what customs in your country will charge you prior to purchase, as we don't have the ability to determine these charges for every country.
No Profit on Shipping:
We do not profit off of shipping, and only charge you for the cost of shipping, packaging and insurance.
ASAP Processing:
In-stock items typically ship the next business day. Printed to order items are usually fulfilled in three business days, or as noted on each item's page, but can vary depending on the item and quantity ordered. We will notify you if an order is delayed beyond our normal processing time. If you have a specific deadline, we suggest letting us know so that we can ensure on time delivery.
Shipment Notification and Tracking:
We will email you a notification when your order ships and provide you the tracking information. The United States Postal Service and UPS are our primary carriers. Shipments over $100 require signature upon delivery, so please provide a shipment address where your package can be signed for.
Insurance:
All shipments are securely packaged against impact and water damage and insured against damage in transit. Damaged items may need to be returned to us or retained for inspection by the carrier or insurance company. Do note that we do not ship photo frames internationally. If you receive a damaged shipment, let us know...you're covered!

Robert's Methodology
Special Edition Print
C-Print: A traditional professional photographic print that is made by exposing photosensitive paper to light and then fixing the image chemically. C-Prints can be produced through several processes, including projecting light through a negative or projecting laser light to expose the paper. We have converted most of our printing over to the digital methods that employ projecting Red Green and Blue laser light onto traditional photographic paper. These methods are capable of producing prints that are sharper and more consistent in color between batches, and allows us to create a master image without the typical dust and scratches that are unavoidable when working directly with film negatives and slides. We print on Fuji Crystal Archive and Kodak Endura papers, both widely regarded as the highest quality archival chromogenic photo papers available. We print most images borderless on gloss paper, but we will print on matte paper, Fuji Super Gloss or transparency and with the borders of your choice on request. See our Epson UltraChrome Printing if you prefer to have your print on canvas, fine art water color paper, or any other material that requires our Epson printer. Custom Printing:
We have moved our greeting card custom printing prices and instructions to this new page.
Epson UltraChrome Print: A photo quality print that is produced with certain models of Epson professional inkjet printers. UltraChrome is the particular ink set, known for it's combination of wide color gamut and exceptional longevity. This ink can be used on a myriad of materials, including canvas, fine art water color papers, and even RC type inkjet papers (also see Giclée Print.

Giclée Print: Meaning "to squirt" in French, it is a general term for high end ink jet prints on fine-art papers. Robert prints some of his original Special Edition Prints as Giclée prints. His current paper of choice for Giclée prints is Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gm2, a very heavy form pressed archival rag paper, which when coupled with Epson's UltraChrome inks, produces beautiful photographic Giclée Prints. Some of the advantages of Giclée prints are that they have a wider color gamut (deeper reds, and yellows than traditional C-Prints. ), have a textured fine art surface (much like a water color paper) and they have longer archival life than any other photographic process (roughly 100 years according to Wilhelm Imaging Research). Robert chooses this medium for particularly well-suited photographs. For additional details, also see Robert's methodology for producing his original Special Edition Prints. Lithographic Poster: A traditional poster produced via a four color separation press.

Photo Greeting Card: A greeting card with a hand mounted real 3.5x5 inch glossy photo. These cards fit into standard 5x7 inch photo frames, giving the appearance of a matted photograph. They are much more impressive than traditional mass produced cards, cost many times more to produce than traditional separation press cards, but are offered here at a very competitive price. We offer them packaged as individually wrapped samples, 8-pack boxes, or as 100 count cases (you can order in any quantity and we will mix and match). Quantity purchases over 100 identical cards can be custom printed to your specification (please call for details). We will also fulfill your large quantity corporate holiday card orders. For orders over 5000 cards and required in less than 14 days, please call to ensure that we can meet your deadline.

Robert's Methodology: Robert either shoots his pictures on film using a 35mm SLR or using a digital SLR. In the case of film, he then drum scans the negative to produce approximately a 100MB TIFF file. Each step in the digital workflow is ICC color managed to ensure that the faithfulness of the original as well as Robert's final print intentions are translated exactly as he expects. He then works with this file in Photo Shop, making all color and contrast adjustments, burning, dodging, removing dust and scratches, etc., until he is fully satisfied that his prints sing for your attention. Finally, he prints his master as either a LightJet prints or a Giclée prints. Return to Glossary, Help or goto the Home Page
Special Edition Prints: These are Robert's original prints, meaning that they are shot, mastered and finished by Robert McMahan personally. Robert is meticulous in producing the most beautiful prints possible, then signs and certifies these prints as his original woks of art. Return to Glossary, Help or goto the Home Page
